Washington, Feb 25(ANI): A former Indian-origin Rutgers student accused of spying on a homosexual encounter, involving his room-mate, is facing trial in New Jersey.
Dharun Ravi, 19, has denied 15 charges, including invasion of privacy and bias intimidation, which carries a potential sentence of ten years in prison.
His room- mate Tyler Clementi, 18, had subsequently, committed suicide on 22 September 2010.
Prosecuting lawyer Julia McClure told the court during the opening statements that Ravi's actions were intended to humiliate his room-mate.
"They were planned to expose Tyler Clementi's sexual orientation and they were planned to expose Tyler Clementi's private sexual activity," the BBC quoted her, as saying.
But Ravi's lawyer refuted the claims.
"He never transmitted any images. He never harassed his roommate, he never ridiculed his roommate, he never said anything bad about his roommate," Ravi's lawyer, Steven Altman said.
Prosecutors were describing the events occurring between 19 and 21 September 2010, when Clementi asked Ravi if he could have the room to himself.
Ravi activated their webcam and saw the two men together, allegedly kissing.
He also posted a message on Twitter when Clementi asked to have the room again after two days. (ANI)
