Bali bomber Umar Patek 'denies meeting Bin Laden in Abbottabad'

Jakarta , Tue, 21 Feb 2012 ANI

Jakarta, Feb 21(ANI): Umar Patek, the suspected mastermind behind the 2002 Bali bombing, has said he never met Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden in a Pakistani town where both were living.

In a video of his interrogation, Patek said his presence in Abbottabad, where Bin Laden was killed last year in May, was "a coincidence".

His lawyer Asludin Hatjani also said on Monday that Patek went to Pakistan as part of his plans to migrate to Afghanistan, and that he never had plans to meet Bin Laden.

According to The BBC, security analysts, however, believe that it was no coincidence that Patek was caught in the same town in which Bin Laden was killed in a US raid.

Patek, who was arrested in January 2011, faces charges for pre-meditated murder, bomb-making and illegal firearms possession. Some of his charges carry the death penalty.

He is also facing murder charges for the Bali bombings and Jakarta church bombings in 2000.

On Monday, his lawyers objected to the murder charges, telling the court that he was not involved in the planning of the attack.

Patek recently admitted to preparing explosives used for the 2002 Bali bombings, but denied knowing the full extent of the plan that killed 202 people. (ANI)
