London, Feb 19 (ANI): Mel Gibson had reportedly tried to come to the rescue of Whitney Houston while she battled an addiction to cocaine, marijuana and other drugs in the early 2000s.
The 'Braveheart' star had previously helped Britney Spears following her public meltdown in 2008 and offered up his estate in Costa Rica as a refuge for the pop star to recover from her struggles away from the spotlight.
According to Tmz, Gibson visited Houston when she was in the throws of her substance abuse problem and spent time with her to help beat her drug demons. Due to his efforts, he was even invited to the singer's private memorial service on Saturday, the Daily Express reported.
However, Gibson was not able to attend the funeral in Newark, New Jersey due to family plans.
Houston died on 11th February and her cause of death has been deferred pending toxicology results.
The singer is being laid to rest on Sunday, a day after her funeral. (ANI)
