Bahrain arrests 2 female US activists in crackdown before anti-govt uprising Anniversary

Manama, Sun, 12 Feb 2012 ANI

Manama, Feb 12 (ANI): Two female American activists have reportedly been arrested in Bahrain as part of a security crackdown ahead of the first anniversary of the anti-government uprising in the country.

According to Bahraini officials and activists, the two women, identified as Huwaida Arraf and Radhika Sainath, were accused of aiding anti-government activists after entering on tourist visas.

Nabeel Rajab, president of the Bahrain Center for Human Rights, said both are US citizens, and they were taken into custody Saturday, The Washington Post reports.

According to the paper, Bahrain officials accused the women of violating tourist visa rules by joining the protests "in order to report on them" for websites and social media linked to Rajab's rights group.

Meanwhile the US Embassy has said that it is looking into the matter.

Bahraini security forces have stepped pressure before the February 14 anniversary of the start of Shiite-led protests seeking a greater political voice in the strategic island nation, ruled by a Sunni monarchy that hosts the US Navy's 5th Fleet. (ANI)
