London, Feb 7 (ANI): Manchester United's new signings will now have to undergo background checks to spot possible wayward stars as part of a drive to make the club appealing to sponsors.
American owners, the Glazers, have brought in a company to research transfer targets and draw up a 10,000-word dossier on each one.
"Sponsors don't like dealing with scandals," the Daily Star quoted a source as saying.
"Big multi-nationals want their names attached to a worldwide brand noted for success and glory with players who are stars and role models," the source said.
The move comes after United off-loaded talented midfielder Ravel Morrison, 19, to West Ham on transfer deadline day after he was convicted of two charges of witness intimidation.
A youth court heard that he subjected the victim of a knifepoint robbery to a two-day ordeal of threats.
"We are very proud of the effort we take before bringing any player to Old Trafford," United's spokesman said. (ANI)
