Bangalore, Feb 2 (ANI): Stona 2012, an international stone art fair underway in Bangalore, is providing a platform for scores of sculptors from across the country.

Sculptors have put on display pieces made of granite, marble, slate, sandstone and quartzite.

Key attractions at the fair have been marble fountains and sculptures of Hindu deities, including a 20-foot tall, five tonne statue of Hanuman carved out of black granite.

"This time, especially we are honouring a lot of artisans in the Shilpgram (Craftsmen's village). We have made very beautiful statues of Hanuman and they have engraved the photos of Amitabh Bachchan, Dr. Rajkumar and Rajinikanth. The Hanuman statue which has been displayed here, after the Stona fair, will be sent to Hawaii," said Guru Shastrimath, the chairman of the Stona Art Fair.

Statues of several film stars such as the legendary Amitabh Bachchan and Rajinikanth also attracted plenty of visitors at the fair.

Sculptor Dharmendra K Sharma, who has sculpted statues of Bollywood starlets such as Deepika Padukone and Aishwarya Rai, was positive his work would garner attention.

"I had decided to make the statue of Deepika Padukone as she is a very famous celebrity and belongs to Bangalore. Previously, I have made statues of Aishwarya Rai and this time I thought of making something unique to attract more people," said Sharma.

The four-day fair has been organised by the All India Granites and Stone Association in association with the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).

Secretary, Ministry of Mines, Vishwapati Trivedi, praised the fair for the work it was doing for the stone art industry.

"This is one of the biggest exposures to the stone industry and the dimensional stone industry in the country, in the region and probably the world. I myself got amazed at the scale of operations and the kind of things people are doing here," said Trivedi.

Delegates from 90 countries including Italy, China, Egypt, Japan, South Korea and Turkey are also taking part in the exhibition.

Stona 2012 ends on Saturday. (ANI)
