US deeply concerned over ISI's links with extremist organizations

Washington, Thu, 02 Feb 2012 ANI

Washington, Feb 2 (ANI): The US has expressed its deep concerns over links between Pakistan's premier spy agency the Inter-Service Intelligence (ISI) and some extremist organizations.

Although Washington avoided commenting on the BBC story on a leaked NATO report that linked Pakistan to the Afghan Taliban, Pentagon spokesperson Captain John F. Kirby said: "We have long been concerned about ties between elements of the ISI and some extremist networks."

Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta "believes the safe havens in Pakistan remain a serious problem and need to be addressed by Pakistani authorities," The Express Tribune quoted Kirby, as saying.

On Tuesday, briefing a Senate committee on intelligence, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said that Pakistan has had only limited success against militants. Addressing the same committee, however, CIA Director General (Retd) David Petraeus praised Pakistan for cooperating in bringing some of the al Qaeda leaders to justice. (ANI)
