Islamabad, Tue, 31 Jan 2012 ANI

Islamabad, Jan 31(ANI): Uncertainty looms over whether a Pakistani doctor, who allegedly elped the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) gather information on former Al Qaeda chief sama bin Laden's hideout through a fake vaccination program, will be charged with treason.

The Abbottabad commission, which is probing the May 2 raid that killed Bin Laden told the ews that they have ordered Dr. Shakeel Afridi to face trial for treason.

The commission's new order comes just days after Panetta said he was "very concerned" for fridi, ABC News reports.

"This was an individual who in fact helped provide intelligence that was very helpful with regards o this operation. He was not in any way treasonous towards Pakistan, he was not doing nything that would in any way undermine Pakistan... Pakistan and the United States have a ommon cause against terrorism," Panetta had said.

"For them to take this kind of action against someone who was helping to go after terrorism I ust think is a real mistake on their part," he added.

Panetta also said he "personally felt" that the some Pakistan's government official must have nown about Bin Laden's hideout.

"I don't have any hard evidence, so I can't say it for a fact. There's nothing that proves the ase. But as I said, my personal view is that somebody somewhere probably had that nowledge," he said.

Another senior Pakistani official, however, said that the commission did not a final say on fridi's fate and that the Pakistani government would decide whether he would face trial.

Afridi allegedly set up a fake polio vaccination program, going door-to-door in Abbottabad in n effort to collect DNA samples from bin Laden's family.

Pakistan's media had earlier reported Afridi admitted to his role, but said he was unable to get ccess to bin Laden's compound or his children. (ANI)
