Main focus to seize illegal arms in poll-bound UP: Police

Lucknow, Jan 27 (ANI): Police on Friday said that their main focus was to seize illegal arms in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh with an aim to prevent unrest.

 

The police officials said that stringent action would be taken against those who were caught dealing in illegal arms.

 

Earlier in the day, police in Lucknow recovered huge cache of arms and ammunition and arrested a person in the case.

 

While talking to mediapersons about the case, senior police official in Lucknow informed that the accused Lovely Tiwari was caught after getting a tip-off from informers.

 

"We received information and based on that, the police did the recovery. We recovered a carbine, pistols, 11 country-made pistols of 315 bore, one country-made pistols of 12 bore and the cartridges recovered are all in front of you. The person from whom we have recovered the arms is Lovely Tiwari alias Kuldeep Tiwari alias Rajesh Tiwari," said Director General of Police, Dhruv Kant Thakur.

 

He told the reporters that Tiwari was also wanted in murder case.

 

Thakur also highlighted that following the instructions of the Election Commission, the police has tightened the security in the state.

 

"We are working on the orders of the Election Commission and our main focus is on the recovery of illegal arms. We have this order that we must look for illegal arms, as there can be unrest due to them. Keeping that in mind, we have deployed our teams and all those who deal in illegal weapons will be severely punished," he said.

 

The police is conducting raids on daily basis with an aim to curb unscrupulous activities.

 

In Uttar Pradesh, elections would be held for the 403-member legislative assembly, in seven phases between February 8 and March 3.

 

The other states where assembly elections are scheduled to take place are Manipur, Goa, Punjab, and Uttarakhand.

 

The results of the polls would be declared on March 6. (ANI)
