Washington, Jan27 (ANI): Various polls in the United States have envisaged a dead heat between Republican presidential candidates Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney before the Florida primary, as the GOP gets ready for the pre-primary debate.
After winning in South Carolina, Gingrich has closed the gap with Romney in polls in Florida, where 50 delegates are at ante and the winner takes them all.
At one point, Romney was leading Gingrich with double digits in Florida. But Gingrich is now matching Romney in the polls in Florida.
According to a CNN/Opinion Research Center poll, Romney leads Gingrich by 36 to 34 percent among likely voters, which is within the poll's margin of error.
Similarly, a poll conducted by Quinnipiac University from January 19-23, also reveals similar results favoring Romney over Gingrich by 36 to 34 percent. Results of both polls were declared on Wednesday.
Public Policy Polling has found that Gingrich is leading Romney 38 to 33 percent among likely primary voters, which clearly demonstrates a 12 percent rise for Gingrich and a seven percent drop for Romney.
Apart from one survey, every poll suggests Romney leading Gingrich by over seven percent, The Politico reports.
Both the candidates are trying to win over the Hispanic vote, which could be the deciding factor in the Florida primary, as over a million Cuban-Americans live in South Florida, and are known to vote Republican.
An ABC News/Univision survey released on Wednesday suggested that Romney has a 15-percentage-point lead over Gingrich among Hispanic voters. (ANI)
