London, Jan 24 (ANI): News International is planning to launch a Sunday edition of The Sun in April, British MP Tom Watson has claimed.
"A News Corp source tells me Rupert Murdoch has seen the draft designs of the Sunday Sun with a launch in April at a discounted price," Watson, one of the most outspoken critics of News International, tweeted.
Rumours that the tabloid Sun could have a Sunday edition emerged soon after the closure of the News of the World, in the wake of the phone hacking scandal in July last year, The Telegraph reports.
Intellectual Property Office records revealed that News Group Newspapers (NGN) took the first step toward registering the trademarks Sun on Sunday and The Sun on Sunday on July 8, the day after the News of the World's closure was announced.
The Internet domain search site 'who.is.' revealed that the domain name 'thesunonsunday.com' is also registered by News Group Newspapers, while 'thesunonsunday.co.uk' is registered by NI Group Ltd.
According to the report, the News of the World's circulation was 2.6 million copies in 2011, with some research suggesting many of its readers would never adopt another paper in its place. (ANI)
