Islamabad, Jan 18 (ANI): Pakistan People's Party (PPP) leader and senior lawyer Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan, who will represent Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani before the Supreme Court on January 19, has said that President Asif Ali Zardari holds immunity from prosecution even in Swiss courts.
The Dawn quoted Ahsan, as saying that under the Vienna Convention, Zardari enjoyed immunity while he held office.
He explained that cases registered against the president fell under the criminal cases category in which no proceedings could be initiated against him.
He said that former ruler General (r) Pervez Musharraf did not have immunity from prosecution because the cases registered against him were civil in nature.
Ahsan also said that his stance regarding presidential immunity and the writing of a letter to Swiss authorities has always been very clear. (ANI)
