Murdoch attacks Obama, Google's opposition to anti-Internet piracy legislation

London, Mon, 16 Jan 2012 ANI

London, Jan 16 (ANI): Media tycoon Rupert Murdoch, who has only been on Twitter for less than a month, used his account on the micro blogging site to attack the Obama administration's opposition to parts of proposed legislation formed to tackle Internet piracy.

"So Obama has thrown in his lot with Silicon Valley paymasters who threaten all software creators with piracy, plain thievery," News Corp's boss posted on his personal Twitter account on Saturday.

White House officials have raised concerns about elements in the proposed Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA).

Google and Facebook already have decried the legislation as heavy-handed while Hollywood studios and music labels say it is needed to save US jobs.

According to The Daily Mail, Murdoch also accused Google of aiding film piracy, branding the search giant "piracy leader".

"Piracy leader is Google who streams movies free, sells advts around them," Murdoch tweeted.

The House of Representatives' SOPA bill aims to crack down on online sales of pirated American movies, music or other goods by forcing Internet companies to block access to foreign sites offering material that violates US copyright laws.

US advertising networks could also be required to stop online ads and search engines would be barred from directly linking to websites found to be distributing pirated goods. (ANI)
