Indian-African origin Kamala Harris to be 1st woman ever to hold California's AG office

Washington , Sat, 25 Dec 2010 ANI

Washington, Dec 25 (ANI): Kamala Harris, an Indian-African origin politician in the United States, is on her way to creating history by becoming the first woman to hold the California attorney general's office in the near future.

Harris served as Deputy District Attorney in Alameda County, California, from 1990 to 1998.

Harris, the daughter of a Tamil Indian mother and Jamaican American father, is now being compared by many to President Barack Obama for being a Democrat trend setter in the country.

"She's a rare talent who will be a national figure shortly. People call her the female Obama. It's more apt to say she is the female Obama that progressives thought they were voting for," Politico quoted Chris Lehane, a former Clinton aide who is now a consultant in California, as saying.

However she resisted all comparisons saying, "It's flattering."

"These comparisons make me uncomfortable because I know what I want to do. I am really excited about being attorney general," she said.

Harris spent a decade as a front-line prosecutor in San Francisco before taking over the district attorney's office, where she pioneered efforts to slow recidivism. She also advocates for "smart" reform of the criminal justice system, including tackling root causes like recidivism, and is opposed to the death penalty, the report said.

"What I would like to contribute to the conversation is an in-depth discussion about what we can do to create smarter criminal justice policy," she added.

Her signature program, "Back on Track," reportedly reduced the recidivism rate in San Francisco from the state standard of 70 percent to less than 10 percent. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger praised it as a model for the state, and Harris wants to build on that model in her new job, the report added. (ANI)
