Eminent pugilist and Asian Games Champion Vijendra Singh Wednesday receive 'Samsung Most Valuable player awards' for his stunning performance at Guangzhou Asian Games 2010.
He was honoured with a kit of Samsung Consumer Durables worth Rs. 2,50,000 at a felicitation function for Guangzhou Asian Games medallists here on Dec 22, 2010.
He was selected 'the most valuable player for Asian games 2010' ahead over four other players ? boxer Suranjoy Singh, shooters Manavjit Singh and Gagan Narang and woman pugilist Kavita by a panel of five sport journalists because of his brave and rocking performance in the final.
Despite injured thumb in the final, Vijendra managed to blank his rival two-time world champion and old nemesis Abbos Atoev of Uzbekistan 0-7 in a completely lop-sided encounter.
This amazing performance has bruised out the bad memory of Common wealth Games in which he could manage to win only Bronze while he was most favourite at home ring in C'wealth Games, Delhi.
Besides Vijendra, the performances of other athletes Somdev Devvarman (Badminton) who won two gold, Ronjan Sodhi (shooting ? one gold), Bajrang Lal Takhar (rower) who won the country's first gold in rowing and Preeja Sreedharan (athlete) for the gold in the 10,000 metres were commended for their appraising performances.
India had won 64 medals including 14 gold in Guangzhou Asian Games 2010. All other athletes who had won medals in the Asian Games were also felicitated with different sizes of LCD television sets and mobile phones.
