Aurangabad cotton farmers demand compensation for rain-damaged crops

Aurangabad , Thu, 11 Nov 2010 ANI

Aurangabad, Nov.11 (ANI): Farmers in Maharashtra's Aurangabad District demanded compensation after the incessant rainfall destroyed cotton crops in the surrounding villages.

They have also demanded a safety net.

"We just want to request the government, that the losses that we farmers have suffered due to the heavy rains should be compensated to us. Similar insurance schemes should be provided to us the way the factory owners are provided. We farmers have no option left except to commit suicide," said Ayub Pathan, another farmer.

Farmers had target of 190 quintals of cotton at the end of the season. But the heavy rainfalls have destroyed the 40 quintals of crops.

"Crops were destroyed because of untimely and heavy rains causing enormous loss of cotton and vegetables like spinach and tomatoes. What should we farmers do? We are being forced into committing suicide, how we would live?" said Jaganath Pakasakar, a farmer. By Abdul Hadi (ANI)
