Floods in northern India leave many homeless

Patiala/ Karnal, Sept 22 (ANI): While the flood situation continues to be grave in different parts of the country, rivers in the northern plains were also in spate following heavy monsoon rains.

 

The rise in the level of water in the Ghaggar river has left many low-lying villages inundated in Punjab's Patiala district.

 

"Our village has been flooded for the past three and half days. All the fodder for the animals have been destroyed. Our crops have been destroyed too," said Roop Singh, a resident.

 

In Haryana, the Yamuna river overflowed, bringing life to a standstill in Karnal District.

 

"The water has entered all areas here destroying all the crops. People are running here and there to save their lives. They are also seeking shelter on their terraces to save their lives. There is shortage of food also," said Jasmeet Singh, a resident.

 

Parts of Orissa, Gujarat and Assam are also reeling under floods.

 

The Kosi river, which burst a dam in Nepal, has heaped massive suffering on millions of people in downstream Bihar. Water levels were now receding there.ut millions were now living on embankments, roads and in overcrowded camps in filthy conditions, exposing them to infections and water-borne diseases.

 

Rescue workers evacuated some 200,000 people in Orissa after flooding by Mahanadi, killed 16 people at the weekend, officials said on Sunday. (ANI)
