Prime Minister's birthday marked with prayers, sweets distribution in Amritsar

Amritsar, Sept. 26 (ANI):Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh's 78th birthday was celebrated on Sunday in Amritsar city by his brother, well wishers and other relatives by distributing sweets and conducting special religious prayers .

 

Prime Minister's younger brother Surjit Singh Kohli along with a Congressman Om Parkash Soni distributed sweets after 'Ardas', the Sikh prayer, held here. "On his birthday, Dr. Manmohan Singh has sent Rs. 5000.00 as donation to the Chief Khalsa Diwan. I have hadnded over that to the authorities. Entire family has done 'Ardas' (prayer) so that almighty give him a long life and enable him to continue to serve the country and the public," said Surjit Singh Kohli.

 

Meanwhile, Chief Khalsa Diwan, a central organization of Sikhs that redresses grievances of the Sikh public in Punjab held prayers for long life of the Prime Minister.

 

A number of schoolchildren also participated in the prayers.

 

"India is fortunate to have a Prime Minister like him. We pray that God give him along life and a good health so that he continues to serve the nation," said Om Parkash Singh Soni, Congressman from Amritsar.

 

Manmohan Singh was born to Sardar Gurmukh Singh and Amrit Kaur on September 26, 1932, in Gah, Punjab, (now in Chakwal District of Pakistan). e lost his mother when he was very young. His paternal grandmother, to whom he was very close, raised Singh.

 

In his schooldays, Manmohan Singh was a hard working student who studied under candlelight, as his village did not have electricity.

 

After India's partition, Manmohan Singh migrated to Amritsar. He married Gursharan Kaur in 1958 and has three daughters-Upinder, Daman and Amrit. By Ravinder Singh Robin (ANI)
