Leading golfers to play in Johnnie Walker Classic

Dec 14:  India will hold the 17thedition of the event for the first time offering the highest prize money of $2.6 million for any golf event in the country

Newly-crowned world champion Scottish legend Colin Montgomerie will be one of the major attractions of the $2.6 million Johnnie Walker Classic 2008 golf tournament, which is scheduled to be held from February 28 to March 2 next year, at the DLF Golf and Country Club in Gurgaon.

Apart from Montgomerie, England’s Lee Westwood and Nick Dougherty, former World No. 1 Vijay Singh, 2005 Johnnie Walker Classic winner Adam Scot of Australia and ace Indian golfer Jeev Milkha Singh will be seen in action swinging their clubs during the four-day event.

2007 Dunlop Phoenix Open champion Briton Ian Poulter, who recently won the championship in Japan, also confirmed his participation for the tournament.

The European Tour, Asian Tour, Australian Tour and the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) have jointly sanctioned the event, which is going to be held in India for the first time.

A total of 132 professionals will be in the fray to pocket the title and winner's purse of $433,000 of the championship. The star-studded field will comprise 47 golfers each from the European and Asian Tours, 22 from Australia, eight from the PGTI and eight would be sponsors’ invitees.

India ’s Jeev Milkha Singh kept it simple by saying at the launch of the event that he would strive to become the first Asian to win a Johnnie Walker Classic Trophy.

“I have played in the Johnnie Walker Classic a number of times across the world but the 2008 event would be something really special, as it is going to be held in my country for the first time and no Asian has won it ever and I can assure you that I would put in all my efforts,” Jeev said.
