Deer Herd stranded in floods in Haryana

Karnal, Wed, 25 Aug 2010 ANI

Karnal, Aug 25 (ANI): A herd of 70 deer has been trapped by floodwaters in Haryana's Karnal District.

The Deer are trapped on a small islet, surrounded by turbulent floodwaters.

"All the wildlife officials and mediapersons have been standing here since last night but no one can do anything about it. And if we try to rescue them, then they might jump off in fear and die," Shera, a local villager said on Tuesday.

According to Wildlife Inspector of the district Azad Singh rescuing the herd is nearly impossible if the deer sense human approach, they may leap into the water and would get washed away.

"There are almost 60 to 70 black deers. The island is surrounded by Yamuna River from all the directions. If we try to rescue them, then they might jump into the river, which can cause their death, as the flow of water is very strong. As of now, they are safe there. As soon as the level of water comes down, with the help of the villagers we will get them to a safe place," said Singh. By Kanwarjeet Singh Virk (ANI)
