Coimbatore, August 1 (ANI): School children in Coimbatore paint their faces to create awareness of the new currency symbol of Rupee.

"We have drawn this symbol on our faces to spread awareness among the people that this symbol is the currency symbol of our country," said Meenakshi, a school student.

The new symbol, designed by D. Udaya Kumar is a blend of the Devanagri 'Ra' and Roman 'R'.

"We are proud to have the new currency rupee for India. We are the fifth country to have this new currency. India is the first Asian country to get this status, and we thought we will promote this to the common public through face-painting and this is done to our children," said Poongathai, a schoolteacher.

The new symbol will appear on coins and bills, and will also feature on computer keyboards and software.

The new symbol is expected to be adopted all over the country in six months, and between 18 and 24 months globally. By Jehovah. G (ANI)
