April 1: Following last week’s vote on the withdrawal of troops in Iraq, US Senate has joined in and given a major blow on Bush’s plans. The bill introduced in the House has put on the deadline, for the withdrawal of troops in Iraq, to be August 31, 2008. Democrats are further looking for overall cuts in the military funding. Bush’s plans, as of now, seems to be limited by the authority of the Democrats after winning the elections.
The vote escaped a narrow defeat and in favour of the Democrats as the count stood at 218 against 212. As the days pass, the packing of US soldiers who are fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan is turning out to be a reality and resentment for President Bush.
The Republicans argue that the insurgency and civil war situation in Iraq can only be avoided by sending in more troops and supplies. However, the Democrats seems to be least entertained by this argument and have taken a firm stand as to call upon the soldiers back home.
Senators’ support for the withdrawal is gaining momentum. This week two more lined up, which gave the Democrats a clean win against the Republicans. Power is slowly shifting into the hands of the Democrats and the recent victory is seen as an important step that will define the plan of action of the victorious.
