Jaffer’s royal knock puts India in command

Nov 30:  India takes firm control in the second Test as they ended up day one at 352 for 3 riding on Jaffer’s unbeaten ton and fine half-centuries scored by Dravid and Tendulkar.

Opener Wasim Jaffer smashed an unbeaten century to put India in a commanding position of 352 for the loss of three wickets against Pakistan at the end of the first day of the second Test match played at the Eden Gardens here on Friday.

Jaffer, who scored his first ton against Pakistan and his overall fifth, remained unbeaten at 192 alongwith Sourav Ganguly 17 not out, when play was called off early due to bad light with 5.3 overs remaining.

The whole day belonged to Jaffer after skipper Anil Kumble elected to bat. He made mockery of weak Pakistani bowling attack by slashing them all over the park. Jaffer shared two-century partnerships laying the foundation of a mammoth total and putting India in the drivers seat.

Jaffer reached his ton by punching leg-spinner Danish Kaneria off back-foot through the covers region. He scored 32 boundaries during his century knock.

The lanky Jaffer stitched a crucial 136-run stand for the second wicket with Rahul Dravid (50) after India lost his other opener Dinesh Karthick early.

Jaffer then put on 175 runs partnership for the third wicket with statemate Sachin Tendulkar. Sachin Tendulkar at the score of 26 reached 1,000 runs mark against Pakistan during his brisk knock of 82.

None of the Pakistani bowlers could make much of an impact as the Indians scored at a very fast pace. Shoaib Akhtar, who cleared a fitness test prior to the start, bowled just nine overs in four spells. Younis Khan led the side in the absence of captain Shoaib Malik, who was ruled out with an ankle injury.
