GJM calls off indefinite Bandh call for 48 hours

Darjeeling, Wed, 23 Jun 2010 ANI

Darjeeling, June 23 (ANI): Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM), the group demanding a separate state of Gorkhaland in West Bengal state, called off their indefinite shutdown in Darjeeling district for 48 hours on Wednesday.

Considering problems faced by the people of the area, the GJM provided them with a 48-hour relief to collect relief material.

The indefinite shutdown being put to effect on Saturday in three hill sub-divisions of Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Kurseong of the state, however, will continue from Friday (June 25).

The relaxation in the Bandh made people come out of their houses in the morning to do buy essential commodities whkle the shopkeepers had a busy time.

"The problem is that there is a lack of food materials and other commodities. So we are selling whatever is left. And we haven't increased any prices and are selling stuff at normal prices only," said Rajen Prasad, a vendor.

The life of the hill people had come to a standstill after the indefinite shutdown call.

GJM supporters had alleged that security forces misbehaved and manhandled women activists of Nari Mukti Morcha, the women wing of GJM, during a peaceful rally in the town of Kerseong in Darjeeling district on June 16.

They went on an indefinite shutdown demanding a judicial probe of the incident. (ANI)
