Disproportionate assets case baseless: Mayawati

New Delhi, Fri, 23 Apr 2010 ANI

New Delhi, Apr 23 (ANI): Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati produced an affidavit in the Supreme Court on Friday stating that all her assets, income and gifts are genuine.

Ahead of the scheduled hearing in the Supreme Court on Friday in the alleged disproportionate assets case, Mayawati told the apex court that the Central Bureau of investigation (CBI) has been acting unjustly towards her, adding that the CBI is viewing the cumulative incomes of her relatives as hers alone.

"We filed an affidavit two days back in which Income Tax department, which passed two orders in April 2010, and even six orders were passed in April 2010. They stated that her assets, statements, gifts are all genuine and bonafide," said Mayawati's counsel, Satish Mishra.

"We took those orders to the CBI Director, where we said that if the Income Tax Department has cleared all aspects with regards to her assets, then this disproportionate assets case should be finished," he added.

The CBI told the Supreme Court on Friday that it would consider a representation made by Mayawati for closure of proceedings against her in the corruption case in view of the favourable orders passed by the income tax authorities.

Mayawati, who filed an affidavit on Wednesday, alleged that the CBI was proceeding in a discriminatory and hostile manner against her in the DA case by adopting different yardsticks vis-a-vis cases those involving Mulayam Singh Yadav and Lalu Prasad.

Mayawati had on April 20 told the CBI that the Income Tax authorities had given clearance to the money she had received, as they were genuine gifts.

The Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court had earlier on March 22 dismissed a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking CBI probe into the alleged expenses of about Rs 200 crore, which included the currency note garland that was presented to Mayawati by her supporters during the BSP's silver jubilee celebrations on March 15.
