BCCI and Colonel and Co. in a row

Nov 20:   Selectors fume over various restrains under the newly laid guidelines issued by BCCI

The five wise men of the senior national selection committee have turned unwise after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) laid down new guidelines for imposing a curb over them, outbreaking a fresh controversy in the mid of an important India-Pakistan series.

The controversy erupted when BCCI issued a gag order against the chairman of selectors, Dilip Vengsarkar, from writing syndicated columns.

It won’t have been blown out into a full-scale confrontation, if the issue was settled to that extent barely, but BCCI incited it by issuing a fresh draft of the rules’ for the selectors, restraining their liberty to a greater level.

BCCI’s GUIDELINES

  • The selectors should watch more domestic matches, mainly the Ranji Trophy matches (both Super and Plate League) in addition they should decide the matches to be seen in advance at the beginning of the season after having a consultation with BCCI Secretary.
  • The selectors shall have no association with the agents of players nor shall they participate in events organised by the player’s agents or contribute articles etc. where such agents are involved. They shall also have no contact with organisations that have interest in the business of cricket in any form whatsoever.
  • The selectors shall not sit in the dressing room of the players during an ODI or Test match.
  • The selectors will not witness overseas matches when the Indian team is on tour, as the Board’s constitution clearly states that the selection committee will comprise the captain, vice-captain, coach and the manager of the team, who will convene the selection meetings, during the foreign tour. The provisions contained in the Board constitution shall be strictly observed when the Indian team is on tour.
  • There shall be no press conference after team’s selection. There will only be a press release issued by the Hony. Secretary providing the details of the composition of the team selected. The members of the selection committee should not speak to the press on selection matters.
  • The selectors shall not write any column for any newspaper nor shall they appear in the electronic media as an expert.
  • Only one selector should watch an International match played in India. The chairman of selectors will prepare the list and convey the same to the Hony. Secretary.

It’s not that the selectors are being gagged but somewhat they are facing humiliation through this curb. At the outset the chairman was banned from talking to the mediapersons after the team’s selection. Then they have been stopped from writing columns in newspapers and now latest in the least that the board also doesn't want them to accompany the team during foreign tour.

It is also learnt that Chairman of Selectors gave a howling response, which prompted the BCCI to do an alteration on certain guidelines.

"Vengsarkar cited different reasons that why he was writing the column, he connected it with his source of income in response to that email and says he has been writing this column for the last 15 years," said BCCI Vice President Rajiv Shukla.

The matter is getting murkier day by day and it won’t come across that it is going to resolve soon, as it appears. The issue will certainly catch flames in the coming days, since there is a strong buzz in the air that the selectors have threatened to quit from their post.

So keep your fingers crossed, as you can get more out of this action in next few days rather than in an Indo-Pak Test match.
