Majuli Island (Assam), Mar 9 (ANI): In a bid to eradicate backwardness and spread awareness and knowledge, a mobile library service has been launched in Majuli Island in Assam.

Mitu Khataniyar started this library service in the island to inculcate the habit of reading among the people to keep them more informed about the world.

The library has four volunteers who use a push cart to take books to its readers.

"With this concept we are trying to spread education in this area. Hope our mission will succeed with the support of the people, with the support of the students, with the support of readers. Hope it will one day become a big library," said Mitu Khataniyar.

Many of the books in the library are supplied by Danielle Bastide and Nadine Beltech of France. The project is also supported by a self- help group Preserver Majuli.

Presently, the mobile library has about 700 volumes of books written in Assamese language. It is going to add another 250-300 books by this month and plan to include books written in English and Hindi as well.

"After Mobile Library came to our school, we learnt many new things and have gained so much knowledge through reading different books provided by this library. I hope this library will continue to come to our school and also to serve the people here continuously," said Arnab Jyoti Khataniyar, a student.

Students can avail the service very easily, they don't need to acquire the Library Card and can borrow the books by just entering their name, class and school in the record book of the library. Books borrowed from the library can be used for two months.

The mobile library has benefited around thousands of students and has covered about 250 educational institutions in the island.

The students have gained knowledge by reading books from this library. Most of the books distributed by it are not in the school curriculum. (ANI)
