Nov 16: Left-arm seamer Sandeep Jobanputra endorsed his skipper’s Jaydev Shah’s decision to bowl first after winning the toss, as he picked up a five-wicket haul to restrict Delhi at 244 in their first innings at the Roshanara Club Ground here on Thursday.

The first day honour of the Ranji Trophy Super League match between Delhi and Saurashtra went to Jobanputra as the seamer gave a denting blow to the hosts batting line up with his tight bowling.

Though the seamer doesn’t have a genuine pace and also there was nothing special in the wicket except some early movement. Jobanputra reaped the benefits with his disciplined bowling followed with the good support by his teammates on the field.

Saurashtra team heavily banks upon their spin attack but yesterday it was somewhat a change of fortune for them as their pacer did bulk of the damage.

Delhi was struggling with scoreboard reading 81/3 at lunch; Aakash Chopra (6), Mayank Tehlan (17) and Virat Kohli (1) were already departed till that time. Soon Shikhar Dhawan (38) made his return to pavilion after the break piling up Delhi’s misery.

It was not that the bowling was exceptional from the visitors, as the Delhi batsmen didn’t apply themselves and also didn’t show any signs of patience to stay in the wicket. Only Rajat Bhatia (36) and stand-in skipper Mithun Manhas (62) provided some resistance with the fifth-wicket stand of 80 before losing out their patience.

Some late action by veteran fast bowler Amit Bhandari with his willow saw the hosts reaching a total to guard Saurashtra from taking first innings lead.

Now its up to the Delhi bowlers to repeat the Rajasthan’s first innings act against Saurashtra, while Saurashtra batsmen will have to seize the initiative provided by their bowlers.

Brief scores: Delhi (1st innings) 244 all out in 85.2 overs (Shikhar Dhawan 38, Mittun Manhas 62, Rajat Bhatia 36, Puneet Bisht 35; Sandeep Jobanputra 5/73, Kanaiya Vaghela 2/27) vs Saurashtra.
