Court issues fresh non-bailable warrant against Sajjan Kumar, slams CBI

New Delhi, Tue, 23 Feb 2010 ANI

New Delhi, Feb 23(ANI): The Karkardooma Court on Tuesday issued a fresh non-bailable warrant against Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in connection with the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case and slammed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for its failure to arrest Kumar and others accused in the case.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Lokesh Kumar Sharma refuted the plea of the investigating agencies to issue a proclamation against the accused on the ground that he was absconding.

The court issued fresh non-bailable warrant against Kumar and 11 other accused for March 10.

The court said on Tuesday, "So far ground work is concerned; CBI does not seem to be serious enough to apprehend the accused. CBI wants to complete only paper work. These are all stereotype reports."

The harsh comments of the court came followed by the CBI acceptance that it failed to apprehend the accused despite conducting raids.

"Is the non-bailable warrant to be executed at the residences only?," said the court asking the CBI, which submitted that the accused were hiding and concealing themselves from the rule of law.

The CBI had on January 13 charge-sheeted Kumar and others in the two cases accusing them of making provocative speeches, leading to the killing of 12 persons in the riots that followed the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984.

The two cases were registered at Sultanpuri and Delhi Cantonment police stations on the recommendations of Nanavati Commission in 2005.

The CBI charge sheeted Kumar and others under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 302, 153-A and 120-B.

On December 31, 2009, Delhi Lt Governor Tejendra Khanna gave the go -ahead to the CBI to prosecute Kumar. (ANI)
