Hydropower project uproots houses in Himachal's Satluj Valley

Jhakri (HP), Dec 12 (ANI): Construction activities for the Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (formerly Nathpa Jhakri Power Corporation Limited), a hydroelectric power project in Himachal Pradesh, has caused immense damage to the houses of many locals in the region.

The Jhakri project coming up on the River Satluj is one of the largest and longest headrace tunnels with the largest desilting chambers, deepest and surge shaft and underground power complex.

Frequent blasts due to the excavation and bursting of the rocks on the hilly slopes have led to scores of houses developing structural cracks in their houses.

The worst sufferers are the residents of the villages in the nearby vicinity.

According to the local environmentalists, about eight to nine houses have already collapsed due to the blasting and dozens of more houses are in danger.

"You can see the cracks on the walls of the houses, about eight to nine houses have already been damaged and dozens of houses situated at a lower level are still in danger.

This is happening due to the blasts, which are carried out for the construction of the power plant.

Whenever we try to talk to the village heads or the power plant authorities, they do not pay any attention to our problems. They are not bothered about our problems," said Birbal, a local environmental.

"We have been living here for years now. We used to live elsewhere, we had to leave that place for the same reason and now we are on the verge of leaving this place. Where will we and the people go if all our houses are damaged," said Kamala Bharati, a resident.

The project located between Kinnaur and Shimla is scheduled to generate around 1500 megawatts of power.

The project includes a 60.5 metres high dam and underground desilting complex and a 27 mega watts Francis unit. It supplies Himachal Pradesh and the Northern Regional Grid States in India.

A high-voltage transmission system (220kV) transports power from the Nathpa Jhakri hydro station to Haryana's grid system. (ANI)
