May 10: After the surrender of TRS legislator Kasipeta Lingaiah of Karimnagar district, on April 27, it was the turn of Soyam Bapu Rao, a Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) legislator in Andhra Pradesh to do the same. He is also charged with obtaining a passport for another woman in the name of his wife.
He surrendered today at the Central Crime Station (CCS) of Hyderabad police in connection with the human trafficking scam. The police have taken him into the custody and may be produced in the court latter.
The police had earlier booked a case against him based on the information given by the alleged kingpin in the Immigration scam and city-based travel agent, Rasheed, during interrogation.
Bapu Rao worked underground after his name cropped up during investigations. He represents Boath constituency in Adilabad district.
Rajupitti, a bookie, and Mohammed Shakeel, a TDP leader, were named by Rasheed as other kingpins of the racket. Both are absconding. Police is also probing allegations made by Rasheed against some leaders of TRS and TDP. A leader of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and former corporator Muzaffer Ali Khan was also arrested the same day.
As the web seems expanding, many more official names are expected to come forward in this scam. It all started with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Babubhai Katara, who was caught last month at the airport while trying to smuggle out a woman and a teenage boy to Toronto on fake passports of his family.
