Nov 05: Salgoacar SC got the better off much fancied JCT Mills 2-1 to set up the semifinal clash with Mahindra United who scraped through to the last four stage after edging past Sporting Clube De Goa 5-3 via tie breaker in their respective quarter-final matches of the Osian’s 120th Durand Cup played at the Ambedkar stadium here on Sunday.
The Monday's last four matches are both Mumbai vs Goa affairs as Churchill Brothers take on Air India while Mahindra face Salgaocar.
Salgoacar got into early lead through Anil Kumar in the 7 th minute of the game as captain Rocus Lamare sent a through ball to Felix Chimaokwu who back passed it to Anil from narrow angle and he made no mistake in slotting it home.
After conceding am early goal JCT fought back hard in search of equaliser. They got unlucky on three occasions with in a span of 10 minutes in the first half itself. First Marcos Pereiera shot finely saved by Salgaocar’s goalkeeper in the 22nd minute. Five minutes later Eduardo header off a corner saved by Remus Gomes on the goal line and again in the 30th minute Shivraj Singh stunning shot came off the post denying them a sure goal.
Instead of getting the elusive parity goal JCT got another setback in the 31st minute as Shylo Malswamtlunga received a fine ball from Jerose Oliveira inside the box and he tapped it over the advancing custodian Karanjit Singh to double the lead.
But JCT’s wonder boy Sunil Chhetri who was tightly marked by the rival defenders came to the rescue of the team, as he pulled back one by giving a deft touch of his head on a long ball by Baljit Sahni in the first half injury time to reduce the margin for the team.
The crowd favourite JCT team could not pull off a victory despite dominating the entire second half. There were numerous occasions when they came close on scoring the equaliser but they fumbled at the last minute.
JCT’s foreign recruit Eduardo was not in his element yesterday, as he did nothing except running here and there. Goan Custodian Marcus Basumatari finely saved his only 25-yard volley shot in the second half.
The Goan outfit never tried to increase their lead in the latter half, they rather preferred to hold their lead while JCT charged down all the time in quest of a goal but luck was not surely riding on their side.
JCT Baljit Sahni got a great opportunity in the dying minutes of the match inside the box, as all he had to do was to head the ball but he squandered it by a soft touch of his foot and it safely landed in to the hands of Goan goalkeeper sealing the doors of the match for JCT team.
In the other encounter of the day, Mahindra prevailed over Sporting Clube-de-Goa 5-3 in the penalty shootout after both the teams were locked goalless in the regulation time and extra time. The match saw some dull drab and boring game from both the sides.
N P Pradeep, Manjit Singh, Harpreet Singh, Mohammad Rafi and Ghanain Yusuf Yakubu were successful marksmen for Mahindra while Bonface Ambani, Micky Fernandes and Bibiano Fernandes made it for Sporting with Samananda Singh missing the spot kick as he hit the crossbar in the second penalty taken by him.
