May 08: Belgian tennis star Kim Clijsters has beaten Swedish Bjorn Bjorg's feat, of being the youngest to quit the sporting career. Bjorg turned his back to sports when she was 26 and Clijsters did same when she was just 23.
She dropped her earlier plan to play only Eastbourne and Wimbledon, on grass. One may see her constant battle with injuries as one of the prime reasons for her decision to quit.
Lleyton Hewitt, being her ex-fiancé said that she knew how to make up her own mind. Lleyton added as she retired from international tennis after having a great career.
It would have been more than just difficult and huge decision for Clijsters to quit at such a young age but Hewitt can see the reasons behind her decision. People find it very difficult to turn down records, money or the cult of celebrity. How many times we see these things driving many athletes to prolong their careers long after they have passed their peak, Kim Clijsters proved that there is more to life than being a professional athlete.
"She knows her body best. Very rarely do you walk on the court feeling 100 percent. But she's had a great career," Hewitt said on Monday.
He added "Kim's so well-liked around the world and she's played well in so many tournaments around the world that it would have been nice for her to compete for the rest of the year,".
Just as Borg was worn out by his lack of privacy and loss in motivation, the popular Belgian opted for a normal domestic life and got fed up with her constant battle against injuries. Clijsters is due to marry an American basketball player in July and wants to give time to her personal life.
