Wrestlers under police scanner prior to Haryana polls

Rohtak, Wed, 07 Oct 2009 ANI

Rohtak, Oct 6(ANI): The police in Haryana's Rohtak district are keeping a strict watch on the wrestlers, ahead of the upcoming legislature polls, for the fear that their muscle power would be relied upon by political parties to seek votes.

V Kamraj, Inspector General of Police of Rohtak Range, confirmed this move by the police and said that such vigilance by the police is an initiative for the safety of the voters, prior to the assembly polls, which are due on October 13.

The police will be keeping a check on the wrestling arenas across the city, so that the wrestlers do not put any kind of pressure on the voters during the polls.

"We are mobilising sufficient security force for the upcoming elections. Further, the police will be surveying the area on the polling day and security posts have also been established across the city," Kamraj said.

"We will be keeping a strict watch on all the wrestling arenas, so that the wrestlers do not interrupt the polling operations," he added.

Kamraj further said that the Border Security Force (BSF) would be deployed on the polling day alongside contingents of state police from two other states - Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Meanwhile, several owners of wresting arena across Rohtak, expressed their displeasure at the police initiative, and claimed that they are being placed under the eyes of needless suspicion.

"Why are these wrestlers being sidelined from the society? They are a part of the society as normal people. Over here we strictly practice wrestling and we have never made any attempts to disturb the atmosphere of the society. Our wrestlers are not into politics," Ranbir Singh said.

Singh also said that many wrestlers have won many medals for the country and should be shown some respect. (ANI)
