Jammu, Wed, 20 Aug 2008 NI Wire

As life was gradually returning to normal after a series of violent clashes between police and protesters in the Jammu & Kashmir region over the Amarnath land transfer issue, curfew has been re-imposed in the entire Jammu district on Wednesday.

Overnight clashes between protesters and security personnel which left over 20 injured in Jammu forced the authority to press curfew again. Army has taken guard to maintain law and order in most parts of Jammu.

Meanwhile, the Sri Amarnath Yatra Sangarsh Samiti- the group spearheading the Amarnath agitation have agreed on Tuesday night to go ahead with talks with a four-member panel headed by Advisor to Jammu and Kashmir Governor, Dr. S.S. Bloeria.

The Sangarsh Samiti has also decided to set up a four-member panel to participate in the dialogue. However, the protesters are adamant in their approach and have extended the bandh call till August 25.

Earlier on Tuesday, curfew was relaxed in Jammu, Samba and Udhampur districts for varying periods, though a large number of people courted arrest in various police stations demanding restoration of the land to the shrine board on the second day of the three-day ‘jail bharo andolan’ called by the Sangarsh Samiti. However, the authorities have also decided not to allow people to court arrest today on the third day.

In the mean time, Srinagar where normal life was completely disturbed for over a week due to the agitation called against the ‘economic blockade’, returned back to normalcy on Tuesday following the separatists’ decission to suspend their strike for three days to provide some relief to the people.
