National award winner physically disabled gets ticket to contest Arunachal assembly polls

Itanagar, Tue, 22 Sep 2009 ANI

Itanagar, Sep. 22 (ANI): A physically disabled candidate has joined the Assembly election bandwagon in Arunachal Pradesh.

Tami Taniang, 47, who got a National Award for his service to the physically disabled, is contesting elections as a candidate of the Janata Dal.

"The handicapped, widows, orphans and the weaker sections of society are unable to fight for their rights. When elections approach, candidates buy votes from them.

"They have no leaders to work for their welfare. So I thought why not to contest the elections and fight for their rights. I have no money but then also I will see whether people will support those candidates or will support me," said Taniang.

Taniang has professed to work better for the rights of the disabled people, widows, orphans and the unemployed youths, and added that he would bring a new legislation for the downtrodden if he wins.

He founded the Handicapped Welfare Society in Arunachal Pradesh.

He has also served as a joint secretary of the Arunachal Pradesh Chamber of Commerce Industries and as the member of the State Women empowerment.

Assembly election in the state will be held on October 13 along with Maharashtra and Haryana. (ANI)
