Maoists block Nepal Finance Minister's convoy

Kathamndu, Sun, 13 Sep 2009 ANI

Kathmandu, Sep 13 (ANI): Nepal police faced a tough time in providing security to the country's Finance Minister, Surendra Pandey as Maoist protestors pelted stones at his vehicle on Saturday.

Pandey, who was in Chipledhunga-Pokhara, about 200 kilometres from Kathmandu, to inaugurate Golden News Daily, had to return without attending the function.

According to sources, the Maoists supporters waved black flags and raised slogans against the government before mobbing Pandey´s vehicle and pelting stones at it.

The Maoists, who headed a government after emerging as the largest political group in the 2008 election, resigned in May following a failed attempt to sack the country's army chief.

The Maoists say the President Ram Baran Yadav had undermined the supremacy of the civilian government by overruling the cabinet.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal says he is ready to involve Maoists to his cabinet but rules out a new government headed by the former rebels. (ANI)
