Oct 23: Sania manages to stay in top-20 bracket in doubles, ranks 19th in latest rankings

India’s tennis sensation Sania Mirza dropped two places in the latest WTA rankings released on Monday. The Indian star has 921 points in the latest singles chart.

The 20-year-old had to cut short the final leg of her season due to stomach injury still she managed to remain in top-20 bracket in the doubles rankings, ranked 19th with 1680 points.

The Hyderabadi girl’s injury lay off will surely give her a setback, as she might not get the seeding at the next year season opener Australian Open. Sania was the first Indian to get seeding at US open.

The injury has also forced her to pull out of the upcoming Austrian and the Canadian meets, which is scheduled in the next two weeks.

Meanwhile, she will be seen straightaway in action in the Hopman cup along with compatriot Rohan Bopanna, where she earned a direct entry. The tournament begins on December 30.

However, Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi held on to their previous 17th and 21st positions in the individual rankings respectively of the doubles ATP rankings.

Bopanna, along with Prakash Amritraj slipped two rungs down and placed at 262 and 272 respectively in the men's singles ranking while there was no change in the doubles rankings for Bopanna as well as he holds on to his 79th position.

Belgian Justine Henin, who won her ninth WTA title in Zurich on Sunday, topped the chart with 5930 points in the WTA rankings ahead of Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova 3750 points, who is on second with a big difference.

Serbian Jelena Jankovic is on third spot with 3475 points. Jankovic’s fellow citizen Ana Ivanovic is fourth, followed by Russian Maria Sharapova in fifth place.
