Kullu, Aug 3 (ANI): A 500 hundred-year old mummy has taken the centre stage at Gieue village in Himachal Pradesh.
The mummy is still sitting pretty at the place where it was stumbled upon 33 years ago. uddhist monks come here everyday to offer prayers and perform rituals. They chant mantras and read out from the Buddhist scriptures in front of the mummy.
The mummy was stumbled upon by Indian paramilitary forces of Indo-Tibetan Border Police.
"It was discovered when a stupa caved in the earthquake of 1975. After that we did not bother for about six to seven years. It was exposed to the rain, sun and snow and in the process its face disfigured a bit.
It tilted to one side. Earlier, the face looked better than a living man," said Tasi Dawa, a monk.
The villagers believe the mummy to be of a learned Lama. According to them, the mummy without any chemicals or pastes on it has survived all the adverse natural conditions.
They believe the mummy to be of a Lama who attained divine powers through his meditation and devotion.
"We believe, he was a great Lama. He was powerful and he had mystic powers. That is why he's preserved even today and he looks like a living being. People come from far off places to offer prayers," said Ringzing Kardo, a resident.
Scientists who studied the mummy said it could be older than five hundred years. hey, however, are yet to find how the mummy without any preservative treatment remained safe and intact. By Prem Thakur (ANI)
