Oct 12: The MoU will bring an opportunity to share best practice methods and expertise of both the countries
The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with UK Sport on Thursday, which will mark the beginning of an international sports development partnership that would be going to help thousands of school children and communities across the country.
According to a realease, Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Mani Shankar Aiyar said that the co-operation programme has materialised at an opportune time. "The joint initiative leverages sports for youth-led national development. By virtue of the multiple benefits that sports generates in the areas of education, public health, social inclusiveness, cultural identity and recreation, this initiative is strategically placed to achieve this objective."
The MoU was signed in the presence of Union Sports Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar and British High Commissioner Richard Stagg and Secretary, Sports, S. K. Arora.
The agreement will culminate national and international experts in the fields of development, physical education, sports development and sporting excellence to provide a way towards quality physical education and sports at the community level and the development of a new path for elite athletes of either country.
The partnership brings an opportunity for both the parties to share their best practice methods and expertise in addition to allow those who are involved in sport in the UK to keep abreast with the latest international developments
The initiatives were already set in motion with the visit to the UK in September by the organisations involved in physical education and school sport in India.
“TheUnion government has taken recent initiatives, such as the proposed Panchayat Yuva Krida aur Khel Abhiyan, that aims to promote sporting activities at the village level, and the draft comprehensive National Sports Policy, to create extensive sports infrastructure in rural areas to provide universal access to children, adolescents and youth,” pinpointed Arora.
UK Sport's Head of Worldwide Impact, Debbie Lye, confirmed that as a sporting nation India has an important role to play in international youth development.
'This agreement is a fantastic opportunity for the UK to work in partnership with a dynamic country that recognises the importance of a youth-led sports development approach,' he said.
“For a long time there has been a mutual desire to work together and, as Commonwealth Games hosts, both countries will be able to share learning and expertise to ensure that a social legacy can be delivered through the hosting of international events.”
