Oct 09: The annual prestigious Nehru hockey carnival will commence at the capital’s Shivaji Stadium from October 10 with the 14 th girls under-17 tournament. The girls age-group tournament is scheduled from October 10 to 18.

A total of 22 teams, increased by last year’s 16, will be in the fray to vie for top honour, including defending champions SGNP Girls Senior Secondary School, Shahabad, who are eyeing for their eighth title. The Shahabad girls had won the championship seven times before and also stood runners- up on three occasions.

According to the general secretary of the Nehru Hockey Tournament Society, G Nandy Singh, “The Nehru tournaments have acquired added significance in the backdrop of India's recent successes, though he lamented lack of interest by the media as well as by different organisations like universities, Para military forces and Armed forces in reviving the game in the country.

''Universities, Para military and Military organisations have no shortage of money and land, but they have not thought about the development of hockey,'' he added.

The tournament is providing a fitting platform for the young hockey aspirants of the country. This is the country’s only hockey society, which has been consistently running different age-group tournaments.

The girl’s tournament will be followed by sub-junior boys under-15 category from October 18 to 31 and junior boys under-17 competition from October 31 to November 13. The main attraction of tournament is the senior level competition, which is scheduled from November 14 to 25.

The society’s efforts has also been acknowledged by New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) authorities, as they agreed to provide them the turf till the end of November by postponing their renovation activities for the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
