New Delhi, May 28 (IANS) Following are the thumbnail sketches of 38 ministers of state in the new Manmohan Singh ministry:

 

C.M. Jatua (Trinamool Congress, West Bengal)

 

 

Age: 71 years

 

 

Academic qualifications: M.Com from Calcutta University.

 

 

Experience: A former additional deputy inspector general of police of West Bengal. In 2001, he became a legislator by winning from the Mandirbazar constituency on a Trinamool Congress ticket. He was elected to the Lok Sabha from Mathurapur in South 24 Parganas.

 

 

Saugata Roy (Trinamool Congress, West Bengal)

 

 

Age: 62 years

 

 

Academic qualifications: M.Sc. (Physics), an alumnus of the prestigious Presidency College of Kolkata.

 

 

Experience: Returns to the union ministry after 30 years after winning from the Dum Dum constituency. Was member of the Charan Singh ministry in 1979. Known for his oratorial prowess and debating skills.

 

 

Sisir Adhikari (Trinamool Congress, West Bengal)

 

 

Age: 69 years

 

 

Educational qualifications: Class 12

 

 

Experience: Known for his organisational skills, the first-time MP brings with him 25 years of experience as chairman of the Kanthi municipality in West Bengal's East Midnapore district. Born in an affluent family of freedom fighters, whose home was burnt thrice by the British between 1929 and 1943, the 71-year-old Adhikari represents the rural face of the Trinamool. He played a key role alongside his son Subhendu in the Nandigram anti-land acquisition stir. He was elected from Kanthi.

 

 

Mukul Roy (Trinamool Congress, West Bengal)

 

 

Age: 55 years

 

 

Academic qualifications: B.Sc

 

 

Experience: Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee's Man Friday. The low-profile Roy, all India general secretary of the party, has been a key person in building the Trinamool organisation from scratch. A member of the Upper House since 2006.

 

 

Dinesh Trivedi (Trinamool Congress, West Bengal)

 

 

Age: 58 years

 

 

Academic qualifications: B.Com (Calcutta University), MBA (Texas University).

 

 

Experience: A Rajya Sabha member from 1990 to 2008, the articulate Trivedi, a man with a pilot's licence, is widely travelled and has given lectures on varied topics in various national and international forums. He was elected to the Lok Sabha from Barrackpore.

 

 

Sultan Ahmed (Trinamool Congress, West Bengal)

 

 

Age: 56 years

 

 

Academic qualifications: B.A.

 

 

Experience: The minority face of the Trinamool Congress, he is a first-time MP from Uluberia. He has earlier been a legislator from Entally.

 

 

S.S. Palanimanickam (DMK, Tamil Nadu)

 

 

Age: 59 years

 

 

Academic qualifications: Law graduate

 

 

Experience: A fifth time entrant in the Lok Sabha from Thanjavur constituency. He was the minister of state for finance in the previous government. During his earlier four Lok Sabha stints, he was a member of several parliamentary committees.

 

 

D. Napoleon (DMK, Tamil Nadu)

 

 

Age: 46 years

 

 

Academic qualification: Graduate

 

 

Experience: He is an actor turned politician from Tamil Nadu. He won the Lok Sabha polls from Perambalur constituency. Learning the political ropes from his uncle K.N. Nehru, state transport minister, the tall actor was first elected to the assembly from Villivakkam constituency in 2001. A recipient of Kalaimamani and best actor awards from the Tamil Nadu government, Napoleon has been an office bearer in the South Indian Film Artists Association.

 

 

S. Gandhiselvan (DMK, Tamil Nadu)

 

 

Age: 46 years

 

 

Academic qualifications: M.A., M.Phil

 

 

Experience: He achieved what Congress party nominees for the Lok Sabha elections failed to do - winning the election in the Coimbatore belt. He bagged the Namakkal seat. Perhaps his Kongu Vellalar Gounder community tag helped him. The DMK's Namakkal district secretary was unsuccessful in the assembly elections and was given the Lok Sabha ticket to prove himself.

 

 

S. Jagathrakshakan (DMK, Tamil Nadu)

 

 

Age: 61 years

 

 

Academic qualifications: Class 11

 

 

Experience: This will be his third stint in the Lok Sabha and debut as a central minister. He was elected from the Arakkonam seat. A chancellor of a private university in Tamil Nadu, he heads a trust that runs various educational institutions. He joined the DMK just before the Lok Sabha elections after running a small party. During his first term as a Lok Sabha member, he was with the AIADMK and appointed the party's leader in parliament.

 

 

Daggubati Purandeswari (Congress, Andhra Pradesh)

 

 

Age: 50 years

 

 

Academic qualification: B.A. from South Indian Educational Trust and Women College, Chennai, and a short course in gemmology at the Gemmological Institute of India.

 

 

Experience: Daughter of the legendary Telugu actor and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) founder N.T. Rama Rao, she was elected from Visakhapatnam. She joined Congress a few months before the 2004 elections and was minister of state for human resources development in the previous cabinet.

 

 

Pannabaka Lakshmi (Congress, Andhra Pradesh)

 

 

Age: 51 years

 

 

Academic qualifications: M.A. from Andhra University, Visakhapatnam.

 

 

Experience: A Scheduled Caste leader from the south coastal district of Nellore. Elected to the Lok Sabha for a third time. Served on various house committees from 1996 to 1999. Was minister of state for health and family welfare in the previous ministry.

 

 

Mangapati Pallam Raju (Congress, Andhra Pradesh)

 

 

Age: 47 years

 

 

Academic qualification: B.E. (electronics and communications engineering) from Andhra University, Visakhapatnam, and an MBA from Temple University, Philadelphia, US.

 

 

Experience: Grandson of freedom fighter Mallipudi Pallam Raju and son of M.S. Sanjeevi Rao, a central minister from 1982 to 1984. First elected to parliament in 1989, he was the youngest MP in the ninth Lok Sabha. Served as a director on the boards of Indian Airlines and Air India from 1994 to 1997.

 

 

A. Sai Prathap (Congress, Andhra Pradesh)

 

 

Age: 65 years

 

 

Academic qualification: Undergraduate from Gulbarga Medical College, Gulbarga, Karnataka.

 

 

Experience: Elected to the Lok Sabha five times from Rajampet constituency. A long time friend of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy.

 

 

E. Ahamed (Muslim League Kerala State Committee, Kerala)

 

 

Age: 71 years

 

 

Academic qualifications: Graduate and LLB

 

 

Experience: He recorded his sixth straight win to the Lok Sabha from Kerala's Malappuram seat. He was the minister of state for external affairs in the last government and was first elected from Manjeri in 1991, which he held till 2004. Earlier, he was a five-time legislator in Kerala and the state industries minister (1982-87) in the cabinet of K. Karunakaran.

 

 

Mullapally Ramachandran (Congress, Kerala)

 

 

Age: 64 years

 

 

Academic qualifications: M.A. LLB

 

 

Experience: A six-time Lok Sabha member, Ramachandran was in political wilderness after his loss in 1999 and 2004 Lok Sabha polls from Kerala's Kannur seat. In 1991, he was the minister of state for agriculture in the P.V. Narasimha Rao government. Currently, he is the state congress vice-president and was elected from Vadakara after getting a ticket at the last moment.

 

 

K.V. Thomas (Congress, Kerala)

 

 

Age: 62 years

 

 

Academic qualifications: M.Sc.

 

 

Experience: A professor, Thomas became a Lok Sabha member for the first time in 1984 and was one till 1996. In 2001, he became a minister in the A.K. Antony cabinet and was one till 2004, when Antony resigned. He has written half a dozen books, including one on Sonia Gandhi. He is known to be very close to the Gandhi family.

 

 

Shashi Tharoor (Congress, Kerala)

 

 

Age: 53

 

 

Academic qualifications: PhD

 

 

Experience: After serving as UN undersecretary general, and losing the election for the post of secretary-general, he returned to Kerala and was a surprise choice of the Congress party to contest the Lok Sabha polls from Thiruvananthapuram. A known writer, he has authored 11 books.

 

 

Mahadev Singh Khandela (Congress, Rajasthan)

 

 

Age: 65 years

 

 

Academic qualifications: M.A. Economics

 

 

Experience: He started his political career as a village head in 1978. He became a legislator for the first time in 1980 from Khandela. He contested the assembly elections seven times and won five times. In 1985, he fought as a rebel Congress candidate and won from Khandela. He contested the Lok Sabha elections from Sikar constituency.

 

 

Sachin Pilot (Congress, Rajasthan)

 

 

Age: 31 years

 

 

Academic qualifications: Educated at St. Stephens College, University of Delhi and Wharton Business School, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, US

 

 

Experience: He has been elected the second time to the Lok Sabha. He won from Ajmer this time. He is the son of late Congress leader Rajesh Pilot.

 

 

Namo Narain Meena (Congress, Rajasthan)

 

 

Age: 66 years

 

 

Academic qualifications: M.A. (Geography)

 

 

Experience: He was deputy inspector of general of police for 13 years till 1993 and has been elected the second time. He was minister of state for environment and forests in the previous government. He was elected to the 15th Lok Sabha from Tonk-Sawai Madhopur constituency.

 

 

Jitin Prasada (Congress, Uttar Pradesh)

 

 

Age: 35 years

 

 

Academic qualifications: M.B.A. Educated at Sri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi University and International Management Institute (IMI), New Delhi

 

 

Experience: Elected to 14th Lok Sabha in 2004, appointed minister of state in the ministry of steel in 2006. He is son of late Congress leader Jitendra Prasada, who was political secretary to former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi. This time he has won from Dhaurehra constituency.

 

 

Pradeep Jain (Congress, Uttar Pradesh)

 

 

Age: 49 years

 

 

Academic qualifications: M.A. LL.B

 

 

Experience: Began his career in students politics in Jhansi. Has won every election he has contested. Has been Congress legislator twice in succession, followed by his first Lok Sabha win this time from Jhansi. Rahul Gandhi was understood to be quite impressed by his political prowess and mettle. His father was a railway engine driver.

 

 

R.P.N. Singh (Congress, Uttar Pradesh)

 

 

Age: 39 years

 

 

Academic qualifications: Graduate in History from St. Stephens College, Delhi University.

 

 

Experience: He defeated B.P. Maurya, powerful Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader and close associate of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati, to win from Kushinagar constituency. He has been a legislator thrice. His father, late C.P.N. Singh, was a close associate of Sanjay Gandhi and minister of state for defence in 1980.

 

 

Gurudas Kamat (Congress, Maharashtra)

 

 

Age: 55 years

 

 

Academic qualifications: B.Com. from R.A. Poddar College. LL.B. from Government Law College affiliated to Mumbai University.

 

 

Experience: One of the seniormost Congress leaders in Maharshtra, he joined the party as a student activist in 1972. Quickly making his mark as an organiser and manager, he was selected to fight the Lok Sabha elections in 1984, when he was just 30. A five-time MP, he has vanquished stalwarts like Subramaniam Swamy, Pramod Mahajan and Jaywantiben Mehta. He was elected to the 15th Lok Sabha from the Mumbai North-West constituency.

 

 

Prateek Prakashbapu Patil (Congress, Maharashtra)

 

 

Age: 36 years

 

 

Academic qualifications: Intermediate, Diploma in Automobile Engineering.

 

 

Experience: He was elected to the 14th Lok Sabha in a by-election (January 2006) and was member of a committee on science and technology in the ministry of environment and forests. This time he has been elected from Sangli constituency.

 

 

Arun Yadav (Congress, Madhya Pradesh)

 

 

Age: 45 years

 

 

Academic qualifications: Commerce graduate.

 

 

Experience: Elected to the 14th Lok Sabha in a by-election in July 2007, he won this time from Khandwa constituency. Was member of the Standing Committee on Coal and Steel and member of the Committee on Public Accounts.

 

 

Jyotiradtiya Scindia (Congress, Madhya Pradesh)

 

 

Age: 38 years

 

 

Academic qualifications: B.A. Harvard University (US) and MBA Stanford University (US)

 

 

Experience: A scion of the erstwhile royal family of Gwalior and son of late Congress leader Madhavrao Scindia, he has been elected for the third from Guna constituency in Madhya Pradesh. He has worked on many committees of central ministries.

 

 

Bharatsinh Solanki (Congress, Gujarat)

 

 

Age: 56 years

 

 

Academic qualifications: B.E. (civil engineering)

 

 

Experience: Elected thrice to the state assembly, this is the second time he has been elected from the Anand Lok Sabha constituency. He has been a member of several consultative committees of various ministries. He is the son of former external affairs minister Madhavsinh Solanki.

 

 

Tushar Chaudhary (Congress, Gujarat)

 

 

Age: 44 years

 

 

Academic qualifications: M.B.B.S., M.S. University, Baroda

 

 

Experience: Son of late Gujarat chief minister Amarsinh Chaudhary, he has been known as an able legislator with a clean image. This is his second entry in the Lok Sabha from Bardoli in south Gujarat.

 

 

Agatha K. Sangma (NCP, Meghalaya)

 

 

Age: 28 years

 

 

Academic qualification: M.A. (Environmental Management), LLB, Diploma in Cyber Laws, Diploma in Corporate Laws, Diploma in Human Rights Laws, Diploma in Securities and Investment Laws.

 

 

Experience: The victor from Tura, she is the daughter of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and former Lok Sabha speaker Purno Agitok Sangma. After doing her LLB from L.S. Law College, Pune University, she joined the Delhi High Court as a lawyer and worked in a Noida based law firm before she plunged into politics. She was elected to the 14th Lok Sabha in a by-election from Tura parliamentary constituency last year. She is the youngest minister.

 

 

Vincent H. Pala (Congress, Meghalaya)

 

 

Age: 41 years

 

 

Academic qualifications: Bachelor in Engineering (BE) from North Bengal University in West Bengal.

 

 

Experience: Businessman turned politician Vincent Pala, who won from Shillong, was the richest among the 11 candidates who contested the two Meghalaya parliamentary seats. he declared assets of Rs.250 million, including a gold watch worth Rs.1.2 million.

 

 

Ajay Maken (Congress, Delhi)

 

 

Age: 45 years

 

 

Academic qualifications: B.A. from Delhi University. M.A. in Public Administration from Himachal Pradesh University.

 

 

Experience: He was minister of state for urban development in the previous government. Has been involved in politics since the time of his student days in Delhi University. He was elected from the New Delhi constituency.

 

 

K.H. Muniyappa (Congress, Karnataka)

 

 

Age: 61 years

 

 

Academic qualifications: B.A., LLB

 

 

Experience: He won from Kolar constituency (reserved for Scheduled Castes) for the sixth consecutive time. He was minister of state for shipping, road transport and highways in the previous ministry.

 

 

Preneet Kaur (Congress, Punjab)

 

 

Age: 64 years

 

 

Academic Qualifications: B.A., Teachers Training Certificate

 

 

Experience: Elected from the Patiala seat in 1999, 2004 and 2009. She is former Maharani of Patiala and wife of former Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh.

 

 

Srikant Jena (Congress, Orissa)

 

 

Age: 59 years

 

 

Academic qualifications: B.A.

 

 

Experience: He has been a three time MP from Janata Dal and won this time from Balesore constituency on a Congress ticket. Jena was a legislator for 12 years till 1989. In June 1996, he was made cabinet minister for parliamentary affairs and tourism. He was union minister of state for small scale, agro and rural industries.

 

 

V. Narayanasamy (Congress, Puducherry)

 

 

Age: 62 years

 

 

Academic qualifications: B.A., M.L.

 

 

Experience: This three-time Rajya Sabha member is entering the lower house for the first time. One of the Congress general secretaries and a member of the Congress Working Committee, he became a central minister for the first time in the last government as a minister of state for planning and parliamentary affairs.

 

 

Harish Rawat (Congress, Uttarakhand)

 

 

Age: 62 years

 

 

Academic qualifications: B.A., LL.B.

 

 

Experience: This is the fourth time he has been elected to the Lok Sabha, while he has also been a Rajya Sabha member. He has been a member of several consultative committees of many ministries. He has been elected from the Haridwar constituency.
