Chandigarh, May 25 (IANS) The Western Command of the Indian Army has provided 13 columns of personnel to the civil authorities in Punjab to help control the unrest owing to the clash among Sikhs in a Vienna gurudwara, an Army spokesperson said here Monday.
'Reacting to the request of the civil administration, the Western Command has provided seven columns for Jalandhar, four columns for Phagwara and two columns for Hoshiarpur so far. The army is providing all assistance to the civil administration in handling the situation and preventing loss to life and property,' the official said.
The Western Command is based at Chandimandir Cantt, 10 km from here.
Most of the forces have been provided from the Jalandhar-based 11 Corps.
The spokesperson added that more forces were on stand-by and could be provided to the civil authorities if the need arises.
