Recent Political and Economic Developments in Honduras
In the year 2003, Honduras and the other Central American countries like Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua signed up an agreement with the US relating to the Central American free trade zone. This would further strengthen the ties between these countries. The long-standing dispute between Honduras and El Salvador regarding the boundary demarcation since 1969 got resolved as they agreed on defining a new border for both the countries. In the year 2006, Honduras and El Salvador defined their borders afresh thus strengthening their political ties. In 2007, the long-standing territorial dispute between Honduras and Nicaragua got resolved by the International Court of Justice in Hague. Besides this, Manuel Zelaya, the President of Honduras visited Cuba, which was the first time by any Honduran President in 46 years. The visit saw both countries approving their maritime boundaries, which was an age-old dispute. In 2008, Honduras, which was a long-time US ally, became a part of Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas (ALBA) presided over by the anti-US leader Hugo Chavez, the Venezuelan President. This event caused considerable shock in the region however, the Honduran President stated the reason for its joining ALBA was the acute poverty it faced and had to join the league for receiving aid and assistance.
