Paraguay Experiencing Continued Troubles with Lack of Employment
Paraguay has a history of economic troubles and that continues even today. Their economy is made up mostly of agriculture and their commercial sector is struggling a great deal. The subsistence sector is quite large with urban unemployment at staggering rates as is underemployment. The underground re-export sector is what makes up for some of the locals? income but considering this is an underground work, it does not contribute to the actual statistics of the economy.
The country does not have any real natural resources to speak of that would contribute great amounts to the economy. However, they do have the world?s second largest facility for hydroelectricity. This is jointly operated with Brazil.
Paraguay depends very highly on their exports to bring in money and for the job opportunities. They export cotton, grains, cattle, timber, soybeans, and sugar. They also depend on the re-export of various products to Brazil and Argentina. Their reliance on the exports to these two countries in particular means that they are subject to the economic struggles of them as well. It can be difficult to predict the growth in these parts due to this reliance.
It is also difficult to predict the true economy in this country because of the level of underground re-exports. While there are many products shipped to the country from Asia and the United States for re-export on paper, there is likely to be twice as much re-exporting done in the underground world alone.
These funds taken from the illegal re-export helps to make extra income for the locals and may assist them in surviving but the government needs to make extra efforts to create legal jobs to prevent even more illegal activity. With the unemployment and underemployment at the current rates, there is little reason for locals to stop the underground re-exporting activities that they are involved with.
