Netherland Antilles Changing Tourism Roles
There are two main industries that Netherland Antilles does really well with and those are the tourism and financial sectors. These sectors have been going strong in the area for the last 40 years. Even through the global financial crisis, this nation did relatively well.
Netherland Antilles had some debt relief which played an important part in their economy during this crisis. They even had surpluses in their fiscal accounts and in the account from which they make their payments. During 2009, the growth rate of the economy did slow to some extent but they did see it.
The main causes for the slowed growth are because of the wholesale and retail trade, construction, restaurants and hotels. The financial sector also contributed to the slowed growth. As a whole, it was due to limited spending or restricted spending and as a result there were fewer investments made.
Even though there was a contraction in the economy in these sectors, they were offset by government spending and in foreign demand for their products and services. There was actually a higher decrease in the level of imports than exports, therefore they were still able to bring in positive revenues. Lower oil prices assisted in this rate and also were responsible for a decline in the rate of inflation. Even the unemployment rate fell in 2009.
Because tourism was and still is a major part of the economy in Netherland Antilles, they have had to make some changes to the industry and to their services. There is a variation in this tourism trade more than ever now with the numbers of people staying overnight and with those coming from cruise ships. To maintain the income brought in from tourism, they have had to reform the method of catering to these individuals. They still capture a large amount of revenue from this sector and it looks as though it will continue in that route.
