More detail about Moldova
Moldova's Dependence on Eastern Europe Damaging Economy
Moldova has a wonderful mild and sunny climate because of its location. It is near the Black Sea which works out well for the agriculture and food processing industries. There is fertile soil in the country and this is used to grow crops like corn, wheat, barley, sugar beets, tobacco, and soybeans. They also raise livestock and are very involved with beekeeping.
Because of some of the best vineyards, world-class wine originates in this country and in fact has built quite the reputation from their high quality products. These wines are exported as are champagnes and other alcoholic beverages. Moldova is also known for its walnuts, and sunflower seeds, apples and various other types of fruit.
Despite the fact that this country has many great products to export, they are still one of the poorest countries found in Europe. They are landlocked between Ukraine and Romania, and it is the second smallest country that belongs to the group of former Soviet countries. Even though they are small, their population density is the highest.
Moldova is in the unfortunate position of being almost completely dependent on other countries for its gas, oil, and coal because it lacks mineral resources. It has experienced many difficulties with its economies and continues to suffer. The dependence on Russia for its energy plus various civil conflicts not to mention periods of draught, have drained this country of any economic stability that it could possibly reach.
This country has made some economic progress because of moves by the government is liberalizing the prices but the ban that Russia placed on Moldovan wine exports was yet another setback in a series of them - the latest setback being the global financial crisis, which they are still reeling from and may be for some time. Only time will tell how the country will see some improvement.
