Madagascar?s Economy Haunted by Politics
Madagascar has been through a lot in the past thirty years. Structural changes started in the late 1980?s, which was due to pressure from various financial institutes based in other counties. There was a privatization program put into place as well as an export processing zone put into development. This was followed by several years when nothing really happened with these efforts.
After 1996, there were many different foreign investments. This grew exponentially but was spurred on by various other privatizations and the export processing zone that had been started almost a decade previous to these times.
Despite the fact that these structural reforms were progressing, there were many issues with the government. It was considered to be very weak and there were plenty of allegations of corruptions to add to it. There was a period of growth between 1997 and 2001 but the levels of poverty did not drop but remained very high.
The political conflict stopped most economic activity in 2002 and in fact remained that way for the first half of the year. Foreign investments dropped drastically and the reputation of the country was damaged. Once the crisis was resolved, the economy had an upturn and the reputation started to get better once again. Since then, there have been ups and downs with relation to inflation. Although inflation has calmed down in the last few years, the growth of the economy has still been quite slow.
In 2002, Madagascar formed a business council with the United States and the U.S. built a council within the country with Madagascar the following year. These two organizations communicate and try to find ways for both countries to benefit from various methods of working the economy. The American Chamber of Commerce was started in 2008 and they began their plans to boost the economy the next year. This being said, the current political activities still work to haunt the economic growth.
