Lebanon Houses Thousands of Refugees
Lebanon, a Middle East country that is located right on the western border of
Syria, has dealt with a large amount of refugees in recent years. This has
created some concerns with regards to the borders with Syria and Israel.
Lebanon has become a home to hundreds of thousands of refugees from Palestine.
These refugees have fled into Lebanon because of its proximity. Lebanon is north
of Israel, a site where a large amount of fighting has occurred between
Palestinians and Israelis. It is estimated that Lebanon has housed at least a
quarter of a million refugees from the area.
This has created a substantial risk with regards to the ways how the countries
of Lebanon and Israel have been treating each other. In fact, a 2006 event where
two Israeli soldiers had been kidnapped led to a dispute that killed more than a
thousand civilians around Lebanon.
Also, there are tens of thousands of refugees from Iraq who are living in
Lebanon. This is being done in spite of Iraq and Lebanon being divided by Syria.
A critical point of this involves the need for Iraqis to escape a country that
has been dealing with a large amount of violence even after the United States
defeated the country?s original dictatorship rule.
Also, the Iraqi citizens have made a long trip into Lebanon as a means of
avoiding concerns with regards to how people in Syria have been fighting inside
the country. There are worries about unrest with that country?s government.
The support that Lebanon has given to all of these refugees is a sign that
Lebanon and Syria are in a dispute with one another. This is especially
difficult because of the ongoing dispute between the two countries with regards
to what the official borders between the two countries are.
