How the Government in Kuwait Works

Kuwait is a small country in the Middle East. It is surrounded on the Persian Gulf with Saudi Arabia on the southern part of the country and Iraq at the northern part. The country is operated with the control of the Al-Sabah family in mind. This family has been operating Kuwait since Kuwait was set free from Iraqi control in 1991.

Kuwait operates as a partial monarchy. Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah is the official Emir of Kuwait. The Emir has the right to elect a Prime Minister. The Prime Minister will be chosen as a means of controlling the country?s government.

People who are twenty-one years of age are allowed to vote on some of the positions in the Kuwait government. This is provided that these people are not police members who are ineligible to vote or men who are in the military. The Majlis al-Umma is the official legislative branch of Kuwait. People can vote for individual members in the branch every four years. The people who are in this branch will be responsible for voting on laws and determining if the orders of the Prime Minister and other higher people are valid.

A judicial branch is also used. This includes individual courts that deal with individual constitutional cases or criminal cases. A key point about this part of the government is that it works with Islamic law as the key point in terms of how decisions are made.

This government is used as a means of helping to control the country and to ensure that it allows the people of Kuwait the ability to have a say in the government. It is slightly similar to what the United Kingdom, the country that Kuwait declared its independence from in 1961, uses while at the same time being different from what used to work in the neighboring country of Iraq.
